You Say 'Memorial' ... I Say 'Two Four'

Until I settled upon the Isle Of Manhattan, I only new this time of year or 'long weekend' as the May 'two four' (24) weekend. A holiday established to honour Queen Victoria's Birthday. But, to be honest, I remember it being more of a weekend in honour of the '24' of beer, either Molson or Labatt, that would signal the start of the first official weekend of the summer! It was a time where all Canadians, young and old, be them family, friends, or foes, would all be cool with the monarchy. You want to be on our money ... go right ahead ... and good call on all the fantastic colours!

We would sit around the fire, singing Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell songs. Fearlessly jump into the freezing lake half tanked knowing that thanks to our beloved Tommy Douglas, healthcare was on the house. Clearly Tommy had some foresight. He must've known that his grandson would be a head-butting lunatic. For those of you who don't know, Kiefer Sutherland, star of 24, is the grandson of Tommy Douglas.

We'd raise a cold one to the brave Canadian soldiers who won the war of 1812 ... and how their children's children went on to create the game of basketball.

But all that beer and talk would make us hungry, so we'd decide to BBQ and attempt to calculate how heavy a half pound burger is. One word. Metric.

I could go on and on, but I will save it for July 1st ... Canada Day!
